Advising

-
A few items of importance regarding registration and degree plans:
- Geology
and Geophysics majors: note that the technical writing and computer
science requirements are no longer part of new
degree plans.
- Minors are no longer required for Geology or Geophysics majors.
- Secondary
education students: please note that the "Geology Major with Secondary
Education Minor" degree plan is seriously flawed and is under review.
New students are encouraged to follow the Geology Major with
Distributed Minor in addition to the Secondary Education course track.
- All
undergraduate majors in Geology and Geophysics who are starting our
department core coursework should plan to take both Mineralogy and
Geoscience Processes in the fall semester.
All students intending to graduate... be sure to follow the following process (see the Dean's office for more details):
- Step 1. Apply for graduation at the Dean's office (Bell
Hall, room 100). You need to take care of any outstanding "I",
"N", or "P" grades before you can apply.
- Step 2. Pay the $30 graduation fee by the March deadline at the
Student Business Office. The fee rises to $45 after this deadline.
You must submit your application and fee by April to be
included in the May commencement program. Late graduation applications
will not be accepted by the Records Office any later than a week before commencement.
- Step 3. The Records Office will recieve confirmation of
graduates and final transcripts 6 weeks after commencement.
- Step 4. A postcard will be mailed to graduates when
diplomas are available at the Records Office. A free, official
transcript will also be provided to you. Any outstanding student
debts need to be cleared with the Student Business Office before the
diploma or transcript are released.

Internships, Jobs, and Stuff
last update: 05/02/2008
It is a good idea to consult both EOS, the bi-weekly published by the American Geophysical Union and GSA Today, a monthly published by the Geological Society of America. Both have many undergraduate opportunities posted,
more than I can keep up to date on this site. These publications are
available in the library, in the department, and from Dr. Hurtado. If you are a member of either organization (and you should consider joining -- student memberships are cheap), you get a subscription.
Internships with NASA!
Open to undergraduates and graduate students! Opportunity
to get paid to work on NASA research at the Johnson Space Center and at
UTEP! Send resumes and cover letters to the project coordinator,
Mr. Oscar Salcedo (salcedo@utep.edu), and to Dr. Hurtado.
Also see the UTEP JobMine listing for more information. The need for students is great and they need earth science
students as well as engineering students! Don't hesitate to
apply!! Students still needed, and opportunities will be available through 2010!!
Shell
is offering a week-long Drilling and Production Camp for students at
various times this spring. All expenses except travel to New Orleans
will be paid. Students will learn about drilling and production
in a hands-on environment. See this flyer (also on Dr. Hurtado's door) for details. All UTEP undergraduate geology and geophysics students should consider doing this!!
Paid environmental internships with the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE).
They will be hiring 15 interns to work at U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service sites throughout the Midwest this summer. See this and this for details.

- The University of Idaho, The University of Alaska, and the Foundation for Glacier and Environmental Research offer Expeditionary Field Training Courses in Arctic and Mountain Sciences. They will be held June 24-August 24 during 2008, 2009, and 2010 in Alaska and Canada. See www.uidaho.edu/glacier and www.juneauicefield.org for more information (there is also a poster at Dr. Hurtado's office).
- Indiana University (www.indiana.edu/~iugfs) offers several summer field programs in Montana.
These introductory field experiences in environmental science and
