Kock, Carlos N. Hornedo; 1960; Metallurgy/Geology;
email May 2009
Mr. Carlos Kock contacted Dr. Philip Goodell about some rock
samples. When we asked what he'd been up to, he responded with
the following:
-
1960
I graduated as a metallurgical engineer with a mining
option and a minor in geology.
-
l960-1969 I worked for ASARCO-ASARCO MEXICANA-INDUSTRIAL MINERA MEXICO,
primarily as a metallurgist with the same exposure in the mining and
geology areas. My assignments during this period were: Avalos,
Chihuahua San Martin, Zacatecas; Santa Barbara, Chihuahua Charcas; San Luis
Potosi. I also had a short assignments in Taxco, Guerrero & Tucson,
Arizona. I returned to the United States with my family and settled in
Laredo, Texas.
-
1969-1992 I worked for Texas Mining and Smelting--National Lead----NL
Industries---Anzon Inc.--Cookson America (an English Company), all at the
same
Laredo site, although the names changed. I managed and operated the
antimony smelter and antimony trioxide plants in Laredo, TX, with
responsibilities of the Wadley, San Luis
Potosi mine and heavy media concentrator (now closed)
-
I became
President & General Manager for Compania Minera y Refinadora Mexicana,
while still in Laredo. Working in Wadley, I had the opportunity to apply all I learned at Texas
Western (UTEP), for I studied first hand the geology of this interesting
and unique antimony
deposits located in the Western side of the Sierra de Catorce range.
The antimony specimens I am about to send
you were obtained in Wadley. The rare elliptical calcite crystal
specimen was given to me by one of our geologists and found in Mapimi, Durango, Mexico. Although the first two specimens are very
heavy, the third one is small and not heavy. I will be happy to send them
to you, as soon as I
return from a short graduation trip to Indianapolis, Indiana, where my
grandson is graduating. I will pack them as secure as possible, to
avoid breakage..
Again, thank you for your interest on these specimens

Riggs, William F.; 1960, Geology (email; 10/06)
William accepted a job as a chemical salesman in 1960 because he knew the
terminology used in the uranium industry in Grants, New Mexico, which lasted
three years. In 1963 he attempted an M.S. in Geochemistry and worked nights
as a chemist, which gave him excellent experience. After two years, he realized
the market for geochemists had not improved during that time.
About 1965 he accepted an offer with Hercules, Inc. in Wilmington, Delaware
to become part of their Market Development staff in developing chemicals for
non-metallic mineral processing; in 1968 he was promoted to head up the group
for three more years; when he was offered a new position with a startup company
in Arizona.
He became the Market Development Manager for the Mining Chemical Division of
Kerley Chemical Corp. in southern Arizona specializing in developing chemicals
for Copper Sulfide-Molybdenite separation, which resulted in another success in
1971. In 1975, Inspiration Consolidated Copper Corp. (now Phelps Dodge Miami
Copper) hired him as their Corporate Director of Research and Technical
Services.
Following that experience, in 1979 he accepted an opportunity in Houston,
Texas to earn a minority equity position by becoming the COO and President of
OrePrep Chemicals, Inc. -- a new startup company specializing in customized
mineral processing chemicals for both the metallic and non-metallic industry.
This company was a major success and was sold to CYTEC (formerly American
Cyanamid) in 1998. Since they had world class customers in all the major
global mining regions using our flotation chemicals, as the COO he was required
to stay for three years to assist in the transition.
Upon retirement at age 63, he formed Mentors International, Inc.; which has
kept him busy consulting on mineral processing problems in southeast Asia, South
America, North America, and the Balkans. However, he still manages about one and
one half weeks a month somewhere in the world.
His personal feelings are that his career at the Geology Dept. in El Paso
opened a world to me that would have been almost impossible without the degree
he received. It made all opportunities he received possible because education
and unique environment that exists on campus in El Paso. He says he feels has
has been truly been blessed and credits his exposure to Texas Western College as
having played a big part in opening the doors for me.
