Barrow, Ronald; M.S., 1992
After leaving UTEP,
Ron spent 8
years with Marathon, 5 of those years in Cork, Ireland. In 1998, he started
work with Seagull Energy which was subsequently bought by Ocean Energy (where he
worked with Dana Jurick) which was subsequently bought by Devon Energy. During
that period, he traveled to Cairo, Egypt, regularly, but never learned to speak
Arabic. In 2001, he left Ocean Energy to work with Murphy Oil (Bob Graham
joined them around the 1st of 2006). He is currently traveling to Pointe Noire,
Congo, on a regular basis for meetings with the local government agency that
oversees exploration. They made a discovery on one of his prospects and
currently are in the process of doing economic evaluations to see if it meets
criteria for development. Other garden spots visited are Tanzania and Libya.
Currently he is trying to learn French which is the language spoken in Congo.
Ron and his wife have 4 children, 3 boys and 1 girl. The oldest boy will be
a sophomore in high school this year, and the youngest (girl) will be in third

Cline, Veronica; B.S., 1997
Veronica completed her M.S. in geophysics in 2000. Currently she is an
Exploration Geoscientist for Chevron Energy Technology Company on a project in
Deepwater Nigeria.. She had two previous internships prior to having an
internship with Chevron -- with the South Carolina State Government and Lamont
Doherty Earth Observatory. Both internships allowed her to expand my
professional network and grow technical skills.
She worked in a Development Geologist position planning and geosteering
horizontal wells and enjoyed going out to the rig and having to think on her
feet and make decisions at the rig. The problem solving aspect was quite
exciting. During the geosteering assignment on horizontal wells, she was able
to have a high-end workstation in the field with the 3-D reservoir models. This
was the first time within the company in North America that someone was using
the 3-D modeling program in the field to assist with real-time decision
making. She was able to make decisions quickly because she had access to the
data and could communicate more efficiently with the drilling personnel when
trying to explain the geology and why certain decisions should be made.
In
October, 2004,
American Petroleum Institute
featured an interview with Veronica. Here is one of the Q/A comments.
Q. What subjects/courses
were instrumental in helping you gain your current position?
A. For me, it had to have been my Introductory Geology Course. If it wasn't
for that course I wouldn't have changed majors to Geology and would most
likely have gone into another industry. Aside from this I would encourage
students that are interested in the industry to have a strong foundation in
Math, Physics and Geology and to take elective courses in Economics, Finance
and Languages.
Veronica, thank you for saying such nice things
about us.

15th year with El Paso. I work in the Environmental Remediation Department
managing the Retail Group. My group conducts remediation activities at
former Tenneco and Coastal Mart gasoline stations located in 17 states.
On occasion, I would see Dana

Although, I have seen them in a long time. I haven't seen anyone else. I
attend UTEP Alumni Association Houston Chapter functions but again I haven't run

How are things? I saw your note today regarding the Homecoming lunch and
thought I should send you a note. I'm sorry to hear the lunch didn't catch on.
Are things going well in El Paso? At UTEP? Have things changed much since
Randy left?
I've had some changes recently myself. I've recently taken a promotion and
moved to Tampa, Florida. I'm still with URS (7+ years, now) but I've taken over
the management of our Corporate IT operations in Tampa. We've only been here for
a week so we are still unpacking the scores of boxes we brought, but the kids
are in school and we are very excited about the change. Janna (she's 20 now)
decided to stay in Austin. She got a small apartment and is working as a teacher
at a day care. Needless to say, she's learned a lot in the last few weeks, but
she's excited to be on her own.
I'm not sure when I'll make to El Paso again. Probably not until next
summer. Claudia's mother and brother still live in El Paso. Claudia's father
passed away this summer and all my family has moved elsewhere.

I
am still teaching on a part-time basis, for a little while longer. Full-time, I
am working online for Allen's company DrillingInfo as database editor, official
title E &
P Trends Editor.
I am thankful for the opportunity to work full-time in
Geology and am relearning a lot of stratigraphy for various basins, the
Williston, the Anadarko, the Arkoma,...I enjoy it greatly.
As for family stuff (if you are going to put this in the
alumni updates), my wife Marla and I just celebrated our 25th Anniversary
earlier this summer. Our married daughter, Ashley (22) just moved with her
husband Josh and their son (Ben - 5 months) to NYC. At home we still have son
Travis (14) who will be starting high school in a few days.
So summer vacations (when possible) will be split between
New York City and Edmond, OK and Dallas (where most of Marla's family lives). I
wish we had the time to revisit El Paso.
Thanks for the email, I have to get back to work. Hope
things are going well for the department, despite the economy. Take care, ya'll.
